Mama (2013) Movie Review

Mama Movie Review,Mama (2013) Movie Review,
Starring Jessica Chastain, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Isabelle Nelisse & Megan Charpentier.
Directed by Andres Muschietti
Story by Andrés Muschietti & Barbara Muschietti

The film is a dark modern day fairy tale that begins with a father who has snapped, killed his coworkers, ex-wife and has kidnapped his children. A snowy road causes an accident that leaves the father and his two children seeking shelter in a shack in the middle of the woods where he attempts to murder his children but foiled in his efforts by a mysterious entity. A few years later, they are found alive, somehow having survived and these now feral children are given over to their dad’s twin brother Lucas (also Nikolaj Coaster-Waldau) and his rocker wife, Annabel (Jessica Chastain). But, the girl’s don’t seem to have come alone and whatever has followed them isn’t happy about sharing them.

Coming to performances the two children (Isabelle Nelisse & Megan Charpentier) featured in the film given superb spooky performances. The chemistry between the two of them looks great and works wonderfully, as well as their relationship with Mama. Jessica Chastain is effective as Annabelle, guardian of two kids. Nikolaj Coster – Waldau (Game of Thrones fame) provides a good performance. Rest of the characters are supportive.

Mama, based on a short, takes a simple three minute premise and expands it to feature length. It is a supernatural horror flick that does a neat job at developing a creepy-crawly environment and maintaining a feeling that something scary could happen at any moment. The script is effective, it just seems director Andres Muschietti didn’t quite know how to give it the sharpness it needs and the shift in tone for the last act is a bit jolting. I was a bit disappointed with it.

The small scary film (budget: $15,000,000) is neatly crafted and shot. Mama story is engaging, and the film deftly combines a handful of scares, a creepy and tension inducing atmosphere with strong performances. On the whole, Mama is definitely worth a watch movie this weekend. Its one the best Scary films i have seen in theaters in recent times.

Special 26 (2013) Movie Review

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Kajal Aggarwal, Jimmy Shergill, Manoj Bajpai, Anupam Kher, Divya DuttaWriter: Neeraj PandeyMusic: M. M. Keeravani, Himesh Reshammiya, Chandan SharmaCinematography: Bobby SinghDirector: Neeraj Pandey

Four years after he made his debut with the critically-acclaimed A Wednesday, director Neeraj Pandey is back with another thriller Special 26 (Chabbis), starring Akshay Kumar. His first film, A Wednesday won the prestigious Indira Gandhi Award for Best First Film of a Director.

Special 26 is based on the daring heist that took place at the Opera House branch of Tribhovandas Bhimji Zaveri in Mumbai on March 19, 1987. Akshay Kumar reprises the role of the unknown man, (Mon Singh) who posed as a CBI officer and his cahoot of 26 men who walked away with jewellery worth several lakhs in broad daylight.

Ajay (Akshay Kumar) and his team of three (Anupam Kher, Rajesh Sharma, Kishore Kadam) are con-men who confidently pose as CBI or income-tax officers and raid the rich. They primarily target politicians or businessmen so that their loss of black money remains unreported. When Inspector Ranveer Singh (Jimmy Sheirgill) turns pawn of one of Ajay’s operations and is suspended from duty, he decides to trace the con-men. Teaming up with real CBI officer Wasim Khan (Manoj Bajpai), they find that Ajay’s next unsuspecting mark in a prominent jewelry store in Mumbai.

Neeraj Pandey manages to get sterling performances from the lead cast. Akshay Kumar out of his usual clowning zone, gives his best effort in recent times. Veteran Anupam Kher steals the show in performance zone. His skillfulness is clearly on display and he plays his character with great sang-froid. Manoj Bajpai gives reliable performance as does Jimmy Shergill while Kajal Agarwal is promising in the small role. But the love element between the lead roles was not that promising. Tiku Talsania, Divya Dutta, Vipin Sharma are supportive with their roles.

Neeraj Panday has shown glimpses of similar treatment of A Wednesday throughout the film. Using Split screens, Shadow shots, hints to coming twists etc. The 80s era is smartly recreated with Lamby scooters, Maruti cars, freed airport terminals, expansive runway views and old currency notes – all justifying the 80’s period.

On the other hand, Neeraj Pandey looked uncomfortable handling the small love story as a sub plot. There was nothing unique about the old buildup and lack of chemistry between the pair.
Neeraj Pandey even left out few loop holes, the Point where Jimmy & Divya bring Commissioner taking an official appointment and later recognizing the fault commissioner suspends both the officers for their negligence. If both the officers were fake why did they take the commissioner for enquiry with official arrangements or is the Minister so foolish that he can’t recognize his state commissioner of police?
Another point, even after installing a microchip to tap the phone of Anupam Kher. CBI never appoints a person to keep an eye on Anupam Kher or try to raid the house after Anupam vanishes from the final act.

Cinematography is neat and effective with high quality wide angle shots and equally effective close up scenes. Relying more on vivid shots to showcase 80’s India makes some scenes  look artificial.  M. M. Keeravani, Himesh Reshammiya, Chandan Sharma’s Music is good. Mujhe mein tu is the best song of the album. Kaun Mera too is worth a listen. Background score by Sanjay Chowdhary is refreshing. Dialogues are mediocre. Art work must be appreciated for the 80’s touch. Production Values are grand.
Special 26 is an engaging tale for sure, but falls short of becoming a brilliant effort. Worth a Watch….

Nakili (2013) Movie Review

Nakili (2013) Movie Review,Nakili Movie Review
Cast: Vijay Antony, Siddharth Venugopal, Rupa Manjari, AnuyaDirector: Jeeva ShankarMusic: Vijay AntonyProducer: Fatima, Vijay AntonyCertificate: UARuntime: 145 Minutes

Nakili is a thriller directed by Jeeva Shankar introduces music director Vijay Anthony in the lead role. Incidentally it is also his 25th film as music director. On both these counts Vijay Anthony has delivered well.

Nakili is the life of Karthik who kills his mother and her illegal mate after his father killed himself discovering the infidelity of his wife. A compliant student of a lesser family and having grown up in a restrictive school for the accused, he seeks a new identity and a meaningful life. Bereaved, he changes identity by forging a deceased’s signature; using his credentials, ends up in a medical college in Chennai. He renounces his mother figure and one would think that a woman of his life will spice up some so-called commercial elements into the script, but new comer Jeeva Shankar surprises us, the story doesn’t take any such detour. Salim stays focused in academics, creates goodwill, but soon the society casts its callous bout on him and he defends it by wielding a killing-spree. How with this seemingly impulsive behavior, Salim reaches the finish line makes the rest of the plot.

It’s a tailor made role and you can’t imagine any other actor doing justice to the role. It’s a Vijay Anthony’s grey-ish character all the way. Especially at handling Senior – Dealing duplicate father – Interval – Restaurant scene with Anuya family shows his mark as an actor. But he needs to work on his emotions and expressions in some scenes. Salim’s character suited the mood of Vijay’s face.
After a dumb debut in Ananda Thandavam, Siddharth Venugopal does a good job. He is promising and nearly carries the first half entertainment on his shoulders. Roopa finally gets a meaty role and she does it with poise. Anuya and Vibha does a cameo. Rest of the unknown cast have all done their parts well.

Classic plots never fail unless they are exaggerated. One such classic plot is Stolen Identity. It’s a trick used masterfully over the years by directors whenever they want to make a solid thriller that shoulders a mild psychological tension in the mind of the impostor. Here director inspired by The Talented Mr. Ripley (It even reminds us of Athadu) and developed the script depending on our nativity. Being Jeeva Shankar’s debut film, there may be seen some imperfects, but as a whole he has given a decent thriller film.

Coming to Jeeva Shankar’s screenplay, he failed to tell the Motive in the movie. Why is he so Bad? If he is a goodie, why should he hide the Murder? Is he a Psycho or Pessimistic? It’s not clear anywhere in the character. The characterization lacks the depth.

Even the Investigation scenes are sloppy, they never take the evidence seriously. They even touch the evidence in the room with hand not using gloves. Even after one body is found, Police fail to take the prints and evidence from the body. The only thing Police does in the movie is coming after an issue and continue so called investigation without any clarity.

The story does glorify crookedness & manipulative behavior. And it finishes with a wrong message that anything can be done to live and a criminal can get away unscathed with his intelligence.
Though there are lots of loose ends to the tale left untied by the time the movie ends, director gets away by implying that this is not the real end & the story continues.

Music by Vijay Anthony is brilliant. Vijay Anthony has tried to prove his mettle with a good background score for his 25th venture. Makkayala Makkayala is a rocking number which is sure going to rock the dance floors while Thappedi Thappekadu is a good composition.

Cinematography by Jeeva Shankar is neat and Editing by Surya is okay till first half, but he fails in the second suspense elements are maintained at the nerve but loses its shine.

On The Whole, Nakili a finely-crafted thriller with some unexplained issues. Let’s hope Jeeva Shankar has his answers in the sequel, if there is one…

Okkadine (2013) Movie Review

Okkadine Movie Review,Okkadine Telugu Movie Review
Cast: Nara Rohith, Nithya Menon, Kota Srinivasa Rao, MS Narayana, Bramhanandam, Chandramohan, Naga Babu, Ali and Rachana MauryaProducer: CV ReddyDirector: Raga SrinivasCensor Certificate: UARuntime: 133 Minutes

After scoring a hit with Banam & Solo, Nara Rohit is once again back to big-screens with Okkadine film. Srinivas Raga who earlier directed Katha has wielded the megaphone for the movie. Okkadine is a romance-action flick, which is billed as a youthful and family entertainer. The movie expounds love and familial affection with reference to the contemporary living.

Story: Shailaja (Nithya Menen), daughter of Shivaji Rao (Sai Kumar), returns to India after completion of her studies. Shivaji Rao is a well-known person in Media, His only goal is to become Chief Minister. She goes to Vizag for vacation with a friend and here she meets Surya (Nara Rohit) a new IFS officer. Sailaja also meets Surya’s family and feels a completion to her loneliness. She loves Surya and his family.  In between, Sailaja witnesses some killings (Inspector & MLA). Meanwhile, she gets proposed by Surya and she also likes him. She shares this with Sivaji Rao who is preparing to enter politics. But in comes a twist that Sailaja doesn’t expect.

Performances: Nara Rohit is better in this one compared to his earlier film. But again there is some problem with his mannerisms. Nitya Menon has amazing ability of emoting and expressing herself. But her skills were too artificial in this film. Naga Babu is Okay in his role. Sai Kumar is given a raw deal in this film. Chandra Mohan, Sudha, Pavani Reddy and Snigdha cameos are fine. Brahmanandam, Srinivas Reddy are ineffective.

Technicalities: It’s a usual mass story on Telugu screen. It needs bright screenplay to make audience glued to the screen. But director could not shape his script right, which resulted in bad screenplay and uninteresting narration. Director Srinivas Raga has churned out a boring saga that defies logic most of the times. Most of the scenes look unconvincing and certain comic situations which involve Bhramanandam as well will make you flinch. Dialogues by Chintapalli Ramana are mediocre. Photography by Andrew is Okay. Songs scored by Karthik are mediocre. Background music is loud. Even Super Hit Puttintollu Tharimesaru remix track failed to attract. Editing by Marthand K. Venkatesh could have been better.

Verdict: First half of the film is tedious. Second half is draggy. The main drawback of the film is thin story, weak screenplay, direction, dull dialogues and mediocre music. On the whole, Okkadine has nothing new to offer. Skip in theaters.

Pizza (2013) Movie Review

Pizza (2013) Movie Review ,Pizza Movie Review,Pizza Review,Pizza Telugu Movie Review
Cast:  Vijay Sethupathi, Remya NambeesanRelease date: February 15, 2013Director: Karthick SubburajScreenplay: Karthick SubburajMusic:  Santhosh NarayananProducers: Santosham SureshCensor Certificate: UARuntime: 128 MinutesGenre: Action – Thriller

Suresh Kondeti after successful Premisthe, Nanna and recent Journey is back with one more promising dubbing movie Pizza, which is a crime thriller. Pizza is the first Telugu film with 7.1 surrounded mix sound effects. This technology is one of its kind and very few has a facility to use this effects.

The film directed by Karthik Subburaj has Vijay Sethupathy and Remya Nambeesan (Thakita Thakita & Tuneega Tuneega fame) in lead roles. Let’s check out the review for more details.
Micheal (Vijay Sethupathy) and Anu (Remya) are orphans and childhood friends. At one point, they decide to move out from the orphanage and live together. Micheal gets a job as a pizza delivery boy while Anu aims of becoming a fictional writer. Life takes an unexpected twist when Anu becomes pregnant forcing Micheal to enter the wedlock. The action begins when Micheal goes to deliver pizza into a haunted house. Which changes his life forever and if you think the twist ends there, wait and watch there is something big waiting.

Vijay Sethupathi literally carries the movie on his shoulders with an effortless performance. His expressions convey a range of emotions and add an authentic touch to the mysterious proceedings. Remya Nambeesan, plays a girl-next-door role with modern approaches and she does her part quite well, aptly assisting Vijay Sethupathi. But the chemistry between the lead pair, lacks the fire. VJ Pooja and the rest of the cast including Aadukalam Naren perform their parts well.

Thrilling opening credits akin to Paranormal Activity, director Karthick Subbaraj sets the mood perfectly. The first half an hour a little indulgent, which takes its time to introduce the viewers, to the characters and their dilemmas. Then builds up a fine amount of anticipation which later paves way for an explosive denouement. The intermission sequence has to be one of the best in South cinema in recent times and leaves the viewer’s twitching in their seats as to what might happen next. Though the story written is simple, but the screenplay was very smartly written by Karthick Subbaraj, which brings a sigh of relief and also grin to the viewers. Climax is a true sucker punch. This is one of those rare intelligent movies which has a very tight script.

Karthick Subbaraj should be applauded for capitalizing the talents of fantastic technicians. Gopi Amarnath‘s cinematography is wonderful. His framing for the romance portions were very subtle in nature, but his real talent was evident during the bungalow scenes. The songs are also in sync with the movie with ‘Enta Parugulata‘ towards the climax being a brilliant rock song. Usage of Violin in the climax is mythic. The background score is very subtle and fresh from Santhosh Narayanan and he efficiently uses the creepy silence factor during the scary portions. Editing by Leo John Paul is crisp and noteworthy. Telugu dubbing is good. Production values are fine.

The film had the right amount of topping [thrills] added with extra-cheese [background-score] served piping hot to the movie-hungry Telugu audience. Karthik Subbaraj, take a bow, what sheer brilliance has been brought out by such a young debut-ant. This is an edge-of-the seat thriller, Folks!! just place your order and prepare to get THRILLED…
